Anyone who has ever dieted has an interest in bariatrics, the study of obesity. Obesity and childhood obesity are at record levels in Western countries. Bariatric surgery has emerged as a treatment which often decreases hypertension and diabetes while simultaneously lowering body fat levels. Four times as many Americans underwent obesity surgery in 2002 as in 1998.
