What nation consumes more energy per person than any other?
Energy consumption in every form ( oil, gas, electricity, etc ) can best be broken down by kilograms of equivalent oil. This method converts the amount of energy in a kilowatt of electricity, for example, into an equal amount of oil to make the comparision easy.
Surprisingly, there are seven countries whose citizens use more energy than the United States. Qatar ranks well ahead of the rest, with nearly 27,000 kilograms of oil per capita. Iceland, Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Luxembourg, and Canada round out the top seven, with the United States at just over 8,000 kilograms of oil, coming in 8th. Trinidad and Finland are 9th and 10th respectively.
Oil, natural gas, and fossil fuels are still the mainstay of energy use, but alternative energies are increasingly becoming viable. It’s interesting to note that major oil producers occupy some of the top slots in the ranking. It seems that having a lot of oil usually leads to using a lot of it.
